The Swan Map · Manchester · 5 rooms
Where to go outin Manchester.
The one English city outside London where the professional crowd actually goes out on a Tuesday. Walkable, so an evening can hold two rooms, and the money sits in one small quarter rather than four.

2 rooms, given in full
The night, the hour the room fills with the people you came for, who is in it at that hour, and what an evening there actually costs. No sign-up, no email.

The Midland Hotel
The city's grand hotel, and the one room in Manchester where sitting alone at the bar carries no explanation at all.

- The check
- £20 to £40 for two drinks.

Who is there
A hotel population more than a local one: people in Manchester for two nights on business, and a steady local layer of lawyers, surveyors and consultants who use it as a meeting room with better chairs.
What to wear
Smarter than the street outside and less formal than Mayfair. One structured piece over work clothes is exactly right. The building is warm and the walk to it is not, so the coat is doing real work.
How to walk in
Sit at the bar in the lounge rather than taking a table. Before half seven the room is arriving and conversation is easy; after eight it becomes a hotel lobby again. Because so much of the room is here for two nights, “are you in Manchester for work?” is a real question with a real answer, which is rarely true in a city's grand hotel.
To someone at the bar who has clearly just arrived.
“Here for work, or do you have the good excuse?”
It is true nine times in ten in this building, and it gives them the choice of which conversation to have. Then ask what the difficult part of the trip is.

Who is there
Manchester's design and university population, plus the people who work in the surrounding professional streets and come for an hour after the office. Not a wealthy room, and worth saying so: this is a room for the practice, not for the money.
What to wear
Work clothes, nothing added. A gallery late in Manchester is not dressed up and arriving dressed up is the only visible error.
How to walk in
Check the programme and go to a late rather than during the day — the daytime gallery is silent and the evening one is not. Stand in front of one work for longer than is comfortable; in a free gallery that is the recognised invitation, and it costs you nothing to be wrong. Then stay for the café, which is where anyone speaks.
In the café afterwards, to someone sitting alone.
“Did you come for something in particular, or just come?”
Both answers are easy to give and neither is a test. Then ask which room they would go back to.

Memberships, invitations, rooms where the hour matters more than the address — fewer people, and more of the ones who count. Nobody walks into these by accident. For each one, the same thing as above: the night, the hour, what to wear, and the first sentence.
