The Swan Map · London · 6 rooms
Where to go outin London.
Four quarters that do not mix — Mayfair and St James's for the art and the old money, the City for the professional money, Soho for everyone else. And the institutions are free, which no other city on this map can say.

The night, the hour the room fills with the people you came for, who is in it at that hour, and what an evening there actually costs. No sign-up, no email.
Hotel bar · Mayfair
The Connaught Bar
The most composed room in Mayfair, and the one where a woman alone at the bar is read as a regular rather than as waiting for someone.
- When
- mardi, mercredi, jeudi · 5.30 – 7.30pm
- The check
- £25 to £60 for one or two drinks.

Who is there
Mayfair's working population rather than its tourists: gallerists, private-bank and family-office people from Mount Street and Berkeley Square, and a steady layer of guests who are in London for three nights and talking to everyone.
What to wear
The room is pale, mirrored and brightly lit — the opposite of a dark bar, and it shows everything. One structured piece, one colour, and a shoe you can stand in. No trainers: you will be served, and you will also have been read.
How to walk in
Sit at the bar rather than at a table; the tables are for parties and the bar is where single guests are put. The martini is made at the table from a trolley, which takes four minutes and is the most reliable conversation opener in London because everyone watches it.
To whoever is next to you while the trolley is at work.
“I have no idea what half of that was. Was it worth it?”
It is honest, it is about the thing you are both looking at, and it gives them the expert's seat. Then ask whether they are staying upstairs or came for the bar — the answer sorts the room.

Auctions · St James's
Christie's, King Street
Free, open to anyone who walks in, and full of people who collect things — the easiest serious room in London to enter alone.
- When
- lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi · Viewing days, 9am – 5pm
- The check
- Nothing. Viewing is free, and so is sitting in on the sale.

Who is there
Art-market professionals and the people who buy from them — dealers from the surrounding streets of St James's, advisers, lawyers who handle estates, and collectors who are there to look at one lot.
What to wear
Daytime viewing is genuinely come-as-you-are and a coat over work clothes is the norm. Evening sales are a notch up: one structured piece, nothing that needs explaining. Nobody here is dressed to be looked at, and dressing to be looked at is the only mistake.
How to walk in
Go on a viewing day, not a sale night, the first time. Take the printed catalogue, stand in front of one lot for longer than is comfortable, and ask a member of staff a real question about it. They are specialists, they are paid to talk about it, and it is the least awkward conversation available anywhere in this city.
To whoever is standing in front of the same lot as you.
“Do you have any idea why this one is worth that?”
Half of them do not, and they will say so, which puts you both level. The other half do, and you have twenty minutes.

Memberships, invitations, rooms where the hour matters more than the address — fewer people, and more of the ones who count. Nobody walks into these by accident. For each one, the same thing as above: the night, the hour, what to wear, and the first sentence.
