The Swan Map · Edinburgh · 5 rooms

Where to go outin Edinburgh.

Small enough that the same two hundred people go to everything, which means being a regular is worth more here than anything you could wear. Three visits and you are a face.

Season: September to July — not during the August festival. Outside it, the people worth meeting are somewhere else, and we would rather say so.

Who is there
Edinburgh's financial and legal population — the fund management houses on Charlotte Square and the advocates from the Old Town — plus a constant layer of hotel guests who are in the city for two nights and talking to everyone.

What to wear
The room is small, dark and panelled. One structured piece over work clothes; nothing that needs space. Princes Street is a wind tunnel nine months of the year, so the coat is not an afterthought.

How to walk in
Sit at the bar and ask the whisky ambassador for something under fifteen pounds, saying plainly that you do not know what you want. That is the room's entire social mechanism and it is why this is the easiest grand-hotel bar in Britain to enter alone — the staff are paid to start the conversation.

To the ambassador, in front of whoever is next to you.

“I have no idea what I'm doing. What should I be drinking?”

It is the most effective sentence in this product, it is true, and it is said out loud in a room of six people — which is how the person beside you joins in.

Who is there
Edinburgh's professional and academic population, and a core of members who come to everything. In a city this size that core is the reason to come back: by the third visit you are a face.

What to wear
Work clothes, nothing added. Nobody here is dressed up and arriving dressed up is the only visible mistake.

How to walk in
Go to a talk rather than to the collection the first time — a talk hands you the subject, seats you next to someone, and gives the two of you something to say afterwards. Then stay for the café. Leaving straight after the art is the mistake almost everyone makes, and in this city it wastes the entire point of coming.

In the café afterwards, to someone who was at the same talk.

“Did any of that change your mind about anything?”

It assumes they were thinking, which is flattering and usually true. Then ask whether they come to these often — the regulars will tell you what else is worth the evening.

Memberships, invitations, rooms where the hour matters more than the address — fewer people, and more of the ones who count. Nobody walks into these by accident. For each one, the same thing as above: the night, the hour, what to wear, and the first sentence.
